Start with a character you genuinely love
Every cosplay I've been proud of started with a character I couldn't stop thinking about. When you love the source, you notice the details: how a collar sits, the exact shade of a uniform, the way someone stands when they're about to fight. Those details are what sell a costume.
Jujutsu Kaisen is a perfect example. On screen, Gojo's outfit looks simple: a dark high-collar jacket and a blindfold. But the collar height and the weight of the fabric make all the difference. Get them wrong and you're a guy in a black jacket. Get them right and people turn around and say, "Oh wow, it's Gojo."
My honest advice for a first cosplay: skip whoever is trending this month. Pick the character you'd happily rewatch a whole arc for. You'll be living in this costume for a full day, maybe several, and loving the character keeps you smiling through the sore feet.

Read the size chart twice, then once more
Most anime costumes are cut to Asian sizing, which usually runs one to two sizes smaller than US sizing. Measure your chest, waist, hips and shoulder width with a soft tape, then compare those numbers to the chart. Don't just go by "Medium" or "Large". If you're between sizes, size up. A tailor can take a jacket in in twenty minutes, but letting one out is often impossible.
Check reviews for comments about sleeve length and inseam too. Those are the measurements that most often catch people out, especially taller cosplayers. I keep a note on my phone with all my measurements so I never have to dig out the tape measure at midnight before an order deadline.
Pick outfits that photograph well
Demon Slayer costumes are some of the most photogenic you can wear. Tanjiro's checkered haori reads instantly from across a convention hall, and the green-and-black pattern looks great in daylight and under harsh indoor lighting alike.
Think about how you'll look in a photo taken from ten feet away. Strong silhouettes, bold colour blocks and one recognisable pattern beat lots of tiny details that vanish on camera. When photographers ask for a shot, that clear silhouette is what makes the picture.

Comfort is part of the costume
Nobody tells you this until your first full con day: you'll walk miles. Break your shoes in at home, add gel insoles, and pack a small kit with safety pins, fashion tape, a mini sewing kit and a phone charger. Your future self will thank you around 3 p.m.
Breathable fabrics matter as well. Heavy polyester capes look amazing, but in a packed hall in summer they can turn brutal. If your costume has layers you can take off between photos, plan for that from the start.
Finish with the small touches
A good wig, the right shoes and one signature prop do more than an expensive base costume ever will. For Itachi, the Akatsuki cloak does the heavy lifting. Add a scratched-through headband and a calm, tired stare and you're done.
Spend twenty minutes styling your wig before the event. Even a cheap wig looks expensive once it's trimmed, shaped and pinned properly. Watch a couple of tutorials, and don't be afraid to take scissors to it.
Most of all, have fun. Cosplay is about celebrating something you love with people who love it too. The best costume at any con is the one worn by someone obviously having the time of their life.
